The Wakefield Whirlwind
Wakefield’s Allan Armstrong worked for independent promoters, mostly in the North East of England, during the 1970s. He was a popular worker, especially on the programmes presented by Cyril Knowles and Ron Farrrar’s Ace Promotions.
Ace Promotions often presented female wrestling and Allan did take part in mixed sex matches, which were controversial at the time. A lightweight wrestler, he was small even by lightweight standards. Renowned for his speed, a frequent opponent, Al Marshall described him as “a whirlwind” when wrestling, “Try to grab hold of him and he was gone,” Al told Wrestling Heritage.
Allan (often mispelled with a single l on posters) was born on 14th February, 1947, the son of George and Bessie.
Allan and his wife, Jean, who married in 1968, parented three sons. Allan Armstrong died peacefully at Pinderfields Hospital, Wakefield, on 5th December, 2018. He was cremated at Wakefield Crematorium on Christmas Eve.
