Starr Attraction
A pioneer of 1960s female wrestling who made her debut in January, 1964. Ann Starr was the wrestling name of Ann Roberts an early 1960s female wrestler, trained by Yorkshire Kid Eric Dudley at the gym behind the Red Lion Public House in Wadhurst, Sussex. She joined the gym as a means of keeping fit and then began to join in with the wrestlers. Away from wrestling she told newspapers her other hobbies were a little more gentle, swimming, ballroom dancing and wrestling.
She made national headlines by working on a show with a fellow trainee, Chi Chi Fathia Djaileb, Empress of the Black Dagger. Their event was referenced in the House of Commons when questions were raised about the banning of female wrestling. The Home Secretary told the M.P. for Hartlepool, Commander J.S. Kerans, that banning female wrestling would not be considered. The contest between Ann Starr and the Empress of the Black Dagger was also included in the David Marchbanks book, “Wrestling The Truth About The Grappling Game.”
In 1965 Ann moved to London and was still wrestling, but we heard no more of her from that time on.
