Careers Early and Late Marty Jones

Ron Historyo
Marty Jones, a man who, like Bridges, never really changed his name or morphed into something different to give his career a boost. Marty did not need to do that and let his wrestling do the talking.

I don’t think it has cropped up before, but I have him from 1972, but it seems he did two shows tagging with Steve Wright in Germany on October 1971.

I am sure Marty Jones would have a ton of wrestling experience before he ever turned pro and given the right matches, would have displayed plenty of skill from the word go.

He had the most bouts with three main men, Rocco, Finlay and Skull Murphy, but I want to make a quartet using Dynamite Kid to who he would have had many more with had Dynamite not gone to North America.

They are not the earliest bouts although I do wonder about the 1972 Rocco bout.

I think the promoters got it right, these truly were the best matches to put Marty Jones in.

I was at Belle Vue that night and I enjoyed the Dangermen v The Dennisons, but those two guys Rocco and Jones stole the show for me. Nothing too much was expected of them, but they really delivered a great bout. Even back then it was tough and fierce.

Of course it went to an even higher level later, but at that time I thought that we had something new to look forwards to.I think it was a bit special. the result ……a 1-1 draw. Was it their first match together.I saw them both do their Belle Vue debut, as I did others like Naylor and Saint.

To end with I have Marty in 2003 . A career of 30 plus years.

Marty certainly one of the greats of the 70s and 80s. Technically may well have been better than Rocco, but did he have the fire of Rocco or Finlat? I think not, though he could show it in matches with them. As mentioned in comments about Bridges the three of them suffered from a lack of really credible opposition in later years. Put Marty at his peak in with Marino at his peak and Marty would be a clear winner. Someone like Norman Walsh could have proved more formidable.

Our Armchair Corner feature Much Ado About Nothing is about the 1972 tag.of Marty and Dane Curtis against the Dangermen. Marty was raw in that match, still a teenager, but way above his partner Dane.
