Tibor Szakacs v Gargantua
Wrestling Heritage welcomes memories, further information and corrections.

Only at the third time of asking could Bobby Palmer’s majestically clipped pronunciation run to a fourth syllable for the northern giant, whom Kent Walton bestowed with the mystique of a masked man until after Round One: “I see the caption says Yorkshire, now we know something.”
Gargantua was good.
Agile, took good throws, and massive. He kept bending to minimise his height which seemed to be the opposite of what he should have done. The 6’+ robe must be somewhere today and would be worth a pretty penny on ebay, as they say.
The hangman’s hold submission had the Hungarian almost touching the lights. But it was always an anomaly that Tibor should have relied so on a borderline wrestling move when he surely had a more skilful move in his repertoire to go down as his speciality.
It was also noticeable how he kept his mouth excruciatingly open for so much of a bout, but this was just one wrestler’s idiosyncracy, and we came to know and expect many more from others – any absence from the norm and we would have felt short-changed.
The giant was disqualified, Tibor sold it brilliantly, Moran remonstrated, and you’d be down to your local hall to see more, and come-uppance.
Note:
This was one of our original Armchair Corner reviews. Later works became much lengthier, but we leave it in its original form as a measure of the site’s development. We wrote this in 2007 and added the photos in 2011
