Conrad Davis

Birmingham’s Conrad Davis was the cigar smoking czar of the second city who was Managing Director of the Embassy Sportsdrome from 1953 until 1968. The Sportsdrome had been built in 1910 as the largest roller skating rink outside of London. In the beginning known as the Empire Skating Palace, later he Embassy Rollerdrome and finally The Embassy Sportsdrome.

Conrad was the son of Abraham Davis, who along with his brother-in-law Charles Clore, had bought the Sportsdrome, in 1946. Charles Clore went on to own Selfridge’s London Department store.

Conrad Davis promoted wrestling at the Embassy until it was turned into a bingo hall in 1968. He promoted independently as part of the BWF and later in conjunction with Joint Promotions. An astute promoter when Dwight J Ingleburgh told him he was going to shave his beard Conrad told him not to do so. Well, not until he’d arranged a match with bearded Stan Furness – loser to shave his beard!
