Another one lost in the mists of time but worthy of remembrance. Henry Litherland was the birth name of middleweight Harry Hall. He wasn’t a big man, but he was very strong, and a tough wrestler who learnt the hard way at Riley’s gymnasium. Born in Aspull on 9th December, 1931, the son of Thomas and Ann.
Harry worked in the rings of northern England during the 1950s, turning professional in 1955. His contests were mostly for Wryton Promotions, witn opponents ithat included Mick McManus, Gentleman Jim Lewis, Cliff Beaumont and John Foley. Our last documented match was in February, 1962 at Sutton in Ashfield against Jack Delaney.
A part time wrestler Harry worked at the Locomotive Works at Horwich, with Jack Dempsey’s son Michael, and in the toolroom of Walmsley’s engineers.
Away from work Harry played fiddle in a quartet known as the Foggy Mountain Five, another member being father Tom. For many years Harry busked around the south of Lancashire playing the concertina. It was a musical ear inherited from his father, Tom, who played the concertina in local pubs.
