Independent Promotions

We know little about Bradford’s Tommy Whelan. He was a professional boxer from 1938 until 1950 and one recorded match as a professional wrestler. He was more prominent as a wrestling promoter in the 1960s, using the name Independent Promotions. Independent Promotions were members of the Wrestling Federation of Great Britain.

We have been told that Tommy Whelan was instrumental in bring the Bholu brothers to Britain on one of their visits but cannot substantiate this. Independent Promoters shows we have since discovered have been mostly in Yorkshire, though we personally saw one in Blackburn with Sheik Michael Taylor topping the bill.
