Jack Callaghan Jr

Jack Callaghan Junior was a wrestling promoter and the son of a well known wrestling promoter, Jack Callaghan.

The family had come over from Ireland during the Irish potato famine in the 19th century Although known as Callaghan the family’s name was Garoghan, which they never legally changed. Jack Junior was born, George Garoghan, in Islington on 13th March 1903. He followed in his father’s footsteps into boxing promoting and management, listing his occupation as Boxing and Sports Promoter in the 1939 census. In 1934 he had gone into wrestling promotion and by 1939 he was better known around the country as a wrestling promoter, venues including the Brighton Dome, Tower in Birmingham, Leicester’s Granby Halls, Drill Hall in Coventry and The Ring in Blackfriars.

In February 1964 it was reported that Jack Junior had returned to Britain from living in Australia, where he had been promoting boxing and wrestling. He had returned for medical reasons and his left leg had been amputated above the knee.

George Garoghan died in Islington in 1965.
