Kid McCoy

Mark Boothman was something of a sensation when he followed his father from the classroom into the ring, presumably adopting the name of the famous American pugilist, Kid McCoy, and not the lesser known wrestler of the 1960s independent circuit.. The phrase “from the classroom” is pracitcally literally true as Mark Boothman was the youngest professional wrestler in Britain at the time.

He was something of a sensation and was soon admired in both singles matches and tag partner with his father, King Ben. Naturally, King Ben was initially responsible for training his son, with Marty Jones also offering his expertise. The result was that the youngster made rapid progress and in 1987, barely out of his teens, he snatched the British lightweight title from Steve Grey, holding the belt until he relinquished it three years later.

Kid McCoy’s television debut came a year before championship success, partnering his father in the defeat of Flash Jordan and Ricky Wiseman. Even though this was a little over two years before ITV removed wrestling this was the first of eighteen televised appearances, and included wins over Zoltan Boscik, Jackie Turpin and Steve Grey.

Moving up a class from his national title Kid McCoy challenged Johnny Saint for the World lightweight title in October, 1986, and held the champion to a draw.

Our last sighting of Kid McCoy was on a 1991 Reslo show broadcast by Welsh language channel S4C.
