Love Thy Neighbour – Or Else!

Love Thy Neighbour was one of the most popular comedy series of the 1970s. It’s one of those that makes us look back and cringe. Based around neighbours of different ethnicity and colour The Guardian declared it was about a “Black guy and a white guy being damned stupid.” One of the stars of the show was wrestler Paul Luty who played Nobby Garside, barman at the social club.

Philip Graham Luty was born on 4th May 1932. His first sporting success came as a rugby player for Dewsbury, though did say that as he weighed only 13 stones at the time he was too light. He was more familiar to fans of the wrestling halls as the rule bending Paul Luty. The bruising 1960s Yorkshire heavyweight could work a crowd, regularly wrestled throughout Britain and Europe but never made it to the top of the bill status. We remember the blond haired leotarded grappler as a good villain who specialised in skulduggery and thuggery, much to the delight of the fans. He capitalised on his wrestling fame and successfully found roles in television and films, including Coronation Street, Emmerdale, In Loving memory, Porridege and the most notable of them all “Love Thy Neighbour.”

Luty found his way from wrestling into acting through actor and writer. Colin Welland, who gave him his first acting role in “Kisses at 50.” In a moment of fiction turning into reality the promoter Max Crabtree had the bright idea of re-naming wrestler Luty as Nobby Garside, his fictional television character. Another daft idea.

Paul Luty died on 12th January, 1985.
