Professional wrestling could boast a few Vikings. The heaviest of the lot was the Jarrow Viking, who claimed to weigh 32 stones at his heaviest. Sapper James recalls watching him in what turned out to be his last bout, at Eldon Square in Newcastle in 1987, “I remember the Jarrow Viking throwing sweets to the audience. Strange behaviour for a villain. He got himself disqualified in the first round against Keith Prosser of Middlesbrough”
The Jarrow Viking was Bob Wright, originally from Newcastle but later living in Hebburn.
He turned professional in the 1960s and worked for independent promoters mostly in the North East of England. His full time day job forced a long retirement in the late sixties until well into the 1981, when he returned to the ring for Dennis Lord Promotions. In his later years the Jarrow Viking worked for Dennis Lord as part of his 007 Roadshow.
Jarrow Viking, Robert Henry Wright, born in Newcastle on 1st May 1932 and died in Hebburn in October 1993.
