White Angel(s)

We differentiate between two White Angels, with a good number more that continued the name following the unmasking of the two of significance.
You will find on our Wrestling Heritage website the original White Angel who wrestled in Britain in the early sixties.
The original L’Ange Blanc was an international star of repute, both with and without the mask. L’Ange Blanc was the original Spanish White Angel who wrestled in Britain in the early sixties.
His iconic trademark of white mask, boots and tights made it clear from the outset that here was one of the good guys.
The identity of L’Ange Blanc was finally revealed as Francisco Pino Farina, unmasked by the domestic masked villain, The Mask in Leeds on 29th January, 1962.

The British White Angel persona was the creation of promoter Paul Lincoln. Lincoln was a fledgling independent promoter always on the lookout for new personalities to fill his bills.
He introduced the masked man to his rings in pursuit of the villainous Doctor Death. With Doctor Death established as an unbeatable masked villain the White Angel appeared on the scene and, as the name suggests, was the antithesis of the Doctor.
The White Angel pursued the Doctor challenging him until the match was finally made, a high profile rivalry cleverly managed by Paul Lincoln without the aid of television publicity.
The White Angel was revealed as Judo Al Hayes, who was making the transition from Joint Promotions to Lincoln and the independents.

Never one to miss an opportunity the enterprising Lincoln decided that if one White Angel could make him money then two could make even more, and fans were introduced to The White Angels tag team.
Many others donned a white mask and made use of the name in the 1970s, including Tony Cassio, Ray Diamond, Bob Taylor, Gypsy Joe Smith, and Len Hurst. We also have record of a late 1940s White Angel, but do not know if he was a masked man.
