Wrestlers Rough and Tough

Looking through some old wrestling diaries from the years 1964 to 1984 I was astonished to note that I had wrestled around 200 different opponents. Some were one-offs, for example, Pat Patton, Les Prest, Jackie and JJ Pallo. Cyril Knowles. Whereas others were multiple foes, wrestlers I had met several or more times; for example, Adrian Street, Jack Dempsey, The Royals, Count Bartelli Ian “Mad Dog” Wilson, Peter Lindberg, Johnny Palance, Paul Mitchell, Mike “Flash” Jordan, Dale Storm, Bruce Welch, Romeo Joe Critchley and Mark Wayne. A mixture of Joint Promotions regulars and wrestlers from the “Opposition” or independent promoters.

I have good memories (and some long term injuries) from those years. Who were the best wrestlers, the toughest, the tricky characters, the most entertaining? Who sticks in my memory for good or bad?

Best Technical Wrestlers:

Colourful Characters:

Toughest Opponents:

Strongest Wrestler I fought:

Hardest Hitters:

(I never wrestled Les Kellett – he whacked me when I refereed him in tag bout and he disagreed with a decision I made!)

Most Fun to wrestle:

Who hurt the most?

Keith Williamson aka Martinelli – three of the toughest bouts I ever had

All time favourite opponent:

Ian Wilson of Stockport! A great all-round wrestler, a character and my most frequent tag partner in the Red Devils team, a good travelling companion and friend.
