AMERICAN WRESTLING ASSOCIATION RULES
“The style shall be catch-as-catch-can. Opponents may grasp any part of each other’s body. No form of strangling is permitted. A fall shall be scored when an opponent’s shoulders are “pinned” to the canvas for not less than three seconds. When a fall is scored, the referee shall slap the back or shoulders of the winner. The referee is the supreme authority and his decision shall be final and without appeal. All stakes and purses go with his decision. There shall not be less than 10 or more than 15 minutes’ rest, as may be agreed upon, between falls. Failure to respond at the expiration of the rest limit shall cause forfeiture of the fall. Neither contestant is allowed to rub any oil, greases or noxious substance on his body. Biting, scratching and all unsportsmanlike acts shall be deemed foul. It shall be the duty of the referee to see that the nails of each contestant are properly trimmed before starting a contest. Light shoes or slippers only are permitted on which there are no metal lacing hooks. Any wrestler leaving the ring during a contest will return immediately to the ring or be counted out. All main events shall be best two out of three falls to a finish, except where no fall has been secured by either contestant within 60 minutes, in which case a single fall shall decide the contest.”
